Berchemia


Berchemia is a genus of plants in the family Rhamnaceae, named after Dutch botanist Berthout van Berchem. They are climbing plants or small to medium-sized trees that occur in Africa, Asia and America.

Berchemia lineata is a climbing plant in the family Rhamnaceae. It occurs naturally in dry thickets in the rainshadows of the central Asian mountains. Berchemia lineata is found from northern China to Nepal, but is also cultivated in gardens.

Berchemia flavescens is a climbing plant in the family Rhamnaceae. It occurs naturally in wet shady areas of the central Asian mountains and highlands. They are found from northern India to Bhutan, but are also cultivated in gardens.

Berchemia racemosa is a shrub in the genus Berchemia.

Berchemia scandens - Rattan vine is a species of climbing plant in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae. It is not related to the Asian rattan palms. Rattan vine grows in the central and southern parts of the United States. The strong, supple stem of the plant, which can be up to 15 cm in diameter, is often used for wickerwork.

Berchemia zeyheri - Pink Ivory, also called Red Ivory, umNini or umGoloty, is a very rare African wood used to make luxury products (for example billiard queues and knives). The Pink Ivory tree grows predominantly in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa. Pink Ivory is the royal tree of the Zulus because only the royal family were allowed to possess the wood. Anyone else possessing the wood (including foreigners) was said to be punished with death.
