Calceolaria


Calceolaria, also called Lady's purse, Slipper flower and Pocketbook flower, or Slipperwort, is a genus of plants in the Calceolariaceae family, sometimes classified in Scrophulariaceae by some authors. This genus consists of about 388 species of shrubs, lianas and herbs, and the geographic range extends from Patagonia to central Mexico, with its distribution centre in Andean region. Calceolaria in latin means shoemaker.

Calceolarias have usually yellow or orange flowers, which can have red or purple spots.


Species
Calceolaria tomentosa is a perennial plant belonging to the genus Calceolaria and native to Peru. Calceolaria tomentosa can reach a height of about 1 meter (3 feet). It has soft, wide cordate leaves and a soft stem. The flowers are yellow.

Calceolaria integrifolia is a shrub belonging to the Calceolaria genus and native to Chile. Calceolaria integrifolia grows to 1.8 meters (6 feet) tall. Its leaves are highly veined, slightly sticky, and have a puckered texture. The flowers are yellow and grow in clusters. The plant flowers from spring to the autumn.

Calceolaria darwinii is a perennial plant of the genus Calceolaria. It's originally from Tierra del Fuego in the southern part of South America. Calceolaria darwinii is a mountain plant growing only to 10 cm (4 in) tall. The flowers are a compound of yellow, white and brownish red.

Calceolaria amplexicaulis is a perennial plant belonging to family Calceolariaceae and native to the Peruvian Andes. The genus Calceolaria has been recently segregated from other members of the Scrophulariaceae, along with Porodittia, and Jovellana into its own family. Calceolaria amplexicaulis can grow to 1 meter (3 feet) of height, with a branching habit, and has soft cordate leaves. Calceolaria amplexicaulis flowers from spring to summer in its native habitat, with clusters of small (12 mm (0.5 in) diameter) yellow flowers.

Calceolaria Herbeohybrida Group is a cultivar group of hybrids in the genus Calceolaria, derived from three species from Chile, Calceolaria crenatiflora, Calceolaria corymbosa and Calceolaria cana.
