Zephyranthes
Zephyranthes is a genus of about 70 species in the Amaryllis family. Common names for species in this genus include fairy lily, rainflower, zephyr lily, magic lily and rain lily.
Flower color in the species ranges from white to yellow (various tints of this color from lemon to sulfur) and pink. Zephyranthes have erect flower stalks which support a flower that may be upward facing or slightly nodding. The funnel-shaped, flowers with six petals can be crocus shaped, but may also open flat such as in Zephyranthes jonesii or even reflex slightly. The flowers of some species have a sweet, pleasant fragrance.
Some Species
Zephyranthes atamasco, commonly known as the atamasco lily or more generally a rain lily or Easter lily, is native to the southeastern United States. It grows in swampy forests and coastal prairies, preferring acid boggy soils rich with lead mold. Following the appearance of broad, grassy leaves in early winter, they bloom in March or April.
Zephyranthes candida - Fairy Lily, also known as the White Rain Lily is a native to the Rio de la Plata region of South America including Argentina and Uruguay but also native to Paraguay andChile.
Other names: August rain lily, White zephyr lily, Peruvian swamp-lily, Zephyr flower, and Autumn zephyr lily. This is a white cultivar of a flower usually found in pink flowering forms, Candida, grows 152 mm to 254 mm (6-10 inches) tall. It's ideal for rock gardens and for tucking into groundcovers.
Leaves are a deep glossy green and measure 3 mm wide. Flowers are erect in perianth white or sometimes pinkish abaxially. The leaf-like brach is 1.8 to 4 cm. They grow best in full sun to part shade and require a medium wet soil.
Zephyranthes grandiflora, common name Rosepink zephyrlily, Rosepink rain lily, Rosepink magic lily, Pink magic lily or Pink rain lily, is a perennial native of Central America and Mexico, with large (10 cm.), bright pink flowers and green strap-like leaves. They are found naturally in moist, open areas, often near woodlands. Another common name of this and other zephyranthes species, rain lily, refers to their habit of blooming soon after a heavy rainfall.
They are widely grown in gardens as annuals and as container plants, although they will overwinter in warm climates.
